This song speaks to me on so many levels. I would like to analyze the part where I like the most.
You think I’m an ignorant savage
And you’ve been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still, I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don’t know
This part taught me to be more considerate of others. Sometimes, it can’t help to feel that you are more educated or more civilized than others. Using our own standards, we tend to judge others. This is not the right way to coexist. I realize after some time that there is no way that you can know everything.
So before judging others, you should start with respect. Just because they are not the same as you or doesn’t know the things that you know, that doesn’t put them as inferior. And who knows…maybe they might know so many things that you don’t know as well.
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
Most people think of this earth as something they can take advantage of. Something they can own. In my perspective, we should care and respect everything around us including all the living and dead things. Everything is more connected than you think.
Don’t make it too late to love and protect this earth. Before you know it, there won’t be an Earth for you to live on.
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew, you never knew
This too is important. The world as we know it is too divided by species, races, colors of skin, and belief. Just because someone looks different or have different opinions than you is not a good enough reason to make them your enemy.
How high will the sycamore grow
If you cut it down, then you’ll never know
Nature is something that requires time to cherish. And to understand nature, you need to give it time. There are things in this world that are unknown. If you just neglect them or ignore them just because they are different, then you can never know the whole story.
Just like trees. If you cut it down, then you will never know how tall it can get.
Hence, we all should confront the unknown. We should respect the differences and make sure to know the whole story before making the decisions. And most importantly, don’t label everyone else as the enemy. Remember that we all are living in the same world and we are all responsible for making peace and protecting this planet.
